Derek Daniells Mixed Media demonstration

Derek worked on white mountboard primed on both sides with transparent "Multimedia primer" to give a good tooth for his soft pastels. He worked from a small photo and no initial drawing, so as not to get bogged down with detail. It was his first painting from that photo. The white was killed with gouache, first roughly applied to establish the general colour ambience of the sky, buildings and river and then, still with a 1" flat brush, a little more more carefully to define the rough positions of the main features..
Small soft-pastel marks, to define detail, and broad swathes of colour, to strengthen large areas, were worked all over the painting.	This process continued throughout the demo. So gradual was the build-up that after the first half there was never a point at which the painting changed from "in progress" to "finished"
The gouache faded as it dried, as does watercolour, and so even areas that had seemed finished required more colour (pastel) as the painting developed.
