Subject : Use of colour
This workshop ran from 10.30 to 2.30

Word of mouth is increasing the popularity of the workshops that Brian Sayers gives at the home of Jackie Corral and, undeterred by a bleak snowy Saturday, a dozen or so painters assembled to be inspired by Brian's energetic and witty discourse on the use of colour in the representation of three dimensional objects in two dimensions.

A variety of fruit and vegetables provided the inspiration for some remarkably good drawings. Jackie's cake and regular cups of tea and coffee fortified the participants.
One of Brian's mantras was: "don't lose the light" by which he meant ensuring that the white of the paper was not lost when planning the highlights; it is much more to be preferred to trying to recover a highlight with white pigment. Another was: "keep it turning" which meant pushing the colour towards the edges of the object to give it roundness.

Among the nuggets of information we learned were the fact that Victor Hugo, author of "Les Miserables" was a better artist than writer, and that "Remembrance of Times Past" by Marcel Proust has a great deal to say on art and artists.

Saturday 10 November 2012
Subject : Portrait painting/drawing
Twelve aspiring portraitists met at Jackie Corrall's house on Saturday 10th November for this workshop on portrait drawing given by her brother Brian Sayers

He began with a brief history of portraiture stretching from ancient Egyptian funerary paintings to the work of living artists such as Frank Auerbach whose portraits are almost abstractions in which he has invested much of his own emotional history in the energy of his manipulation of thick masses of paint.

Each of us was given a copy of a monochrome photograph of a teenage girl from which to work. Brian stressed that to achieve a likeness required careful measurement to position and size the main features. He then got us to delineate the tonal areas, suggesting that they be limited to no more than four between complete black and the white representing the lightest highlight. There followed instruction on the shading of these areas to produce a 3D effect.

Then, working with concentration and enjoyment, we produced some creditable portraits of which this one by Katie Macdowel illustrates very well the shading technique for the appearance of 3D.

Brian referenced the work of artists such as Euan Uglow, William Roberts and Sir William Coldstream in illustrating his talk, which was given with enthusiasm and much humour. It was a most rewarding day and thanks are due to Jackie for hosting it and, of course to Brian for his guidance.
